Network Marketing Hierarchy of Needs
I am going to adapt Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs so that you can see how this fits directly into the distributor’s life cycle. This is a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization.
There are five stages of human needs and Maslow described these desires as ordered in a hierarchy where a level cannot be bypassed until that need is fulfilled.
Level 1 – Physiological
This is the Network Marketing Professional who has hit rock bottom and they are in the process of losing everything. Maybe they were fired from a job, just ended a marriage, had a loved one pass away, or anything else that would lead to extreme struggle. Somehow they managed to find $150 to get started with your organization and if this does not work, life is over for them.
They will lose their home.
They will lose their car.
They will lose their reputation
They will lose their self-esteem, etc.
I know you are more than familiar with people in this category and the way to motivate them is NOT to talk about the endless luxuries that become possible once they build their organization and earn a consistent stream of residual income, but rather to meet them where they are and help them fulfill level one. They need to get back on their feet and simply begin to cover the bills, get food for themselves and their family, and get a good night sleep without waking up in cold sweats because of their situation.
Level 2 – Safety
Once the member of your team is back on their feet and able to at least cover the bare minimal expenses, they will now be able to transcend into Level 2 where they desire safety.
When someone is operating with nothing, safety seems like an unreachable goal and they only need enough to survive, but once they begin to make ends meet, now they are looking for stability within their lives.
This is the Network Marketing Professional who is deciding whether they should GO PRO or if they should look for a more stable job.
This is the Network Marketing Professional who is seeking security in their life when it comes to their health, their finances, and their relationships.
This is the Network Marketing Professional who is beginning to analyze their resources, time and money, in order to determine if this is a viable path.
When you have a member of your team inside of this level, it is absolutely essential to provide them with a roadmap that is sustainable and proven to work.
This is why SYNDUIT and some other programs are so valuable for your business. They have been crowdsourced proven and compliant business growth strategies from Network Marketing Professionals for Network Marketing Professionals. This is the system for replicable success, which happens to be the DESIRE of anyone within this level.
Level 3 – Love/Belonging
Now that the member of your team has stability and safety as a result of being a Network Marketer, they are in need of love and support from the rest of your organization.
This is an intangible benefit of being a Network Marketing Professional.
Everyone requires a sense of belonging.
This means that you have a desire to feel like you are part of something.
This means that you have the desire to feel the support and love of other people within your network.
This means that you have the desire to find a place where like-minded people exist.
When you find your place of belonging, there is more meaning brought into your life and everything becomes richer.
A distributor who falls within this level needs to be reminded that they are not alone. They are part of something powerful, they are part of something impactful, and they are part of something meaningful, which will fulfill their need for belonging.
Level 4 – Esteem
When someone on your team reaches this level, it is time to acknowledge and celebrate their successes publicly. This is an enormous achievement because they have a foundation for survival, generated enough resources for security, understand the importance of being in a tribe, and now they will most likely GO PRO as a Network Marketer. They have risen to leadership status and are ready to take on the responsibility of guiding people through the hierarchy. I recommend bringing people at this level into weekly or monthly private leadership meetings/retreats, asking them to conduct trainings, and allowing them to share ideas to benefit the entire organization. In order to fulfill this need, you must make this person feel extremely important because of their accomplishments.
Level 5 – Self Actualization
This is the drive for every Network Marketing Professional and it has nothing to do with the amount of money that someone earns, but rather their ability to experience FREEDOM. This is a big deal because at this point the Network Marketing Professional is in a state of flow where they feel extremely creative and are able to solve complex challenges for groups or individuals. When someone is at this level, you want to just give them the reigns and let them do what they do. These people are actualizing their dreams and desires and are a living example of someone who has achieved FREEDOM. They can do whatever they want, whenever they want, and as often as they want without ever saying “Can I?” and only saying, “I CAN!”
